Risen Christ

RisenchristjesusresurrectioniconPraise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead – 1 Peter 1:3

I have no idea where this picture of the risen Christ comes from, but I suspect the flag of victory in his hand narrows the options down a bit.

What are your thoughts about flags in Christian art? Personally I find them a bit of a turn off, they conjure up all the wrong associations for me. And to be honest, when it comes to symbols, I much prefer rainbows and images suggestive of new life as symbols of hope.

But on another level I can appreciate why flags of victory would resonate with some cultures. Through his resurrection Jesus defeated death. So that we need no longer fear death or those who wield it as a tool of statecraft. So the use of flags in Christian art is potentially subversive, but to truly bring out their subversive potential I think I'd need to see a few broken, or at least fallen, national flags on the ground.
