In the occult but not of the occult

To be in the world but not of the world is a well known phrase drawn from the prayer of Jesus for his disciples in John 17. But sometimes I wonder if it’s too familiar, because I see many referring to it who quite clearly have no thought through the implications. I mix with a lot of occultists, so I would phrase it this way: I am called to be in the occult but not of the occult. Sound unorthodox? How is it any more unorthodox than the original statement?
