Mercy is not based on love alone

Mercy involves both truth and love. Truth, in that mercy involves no denial of wrongs having been committed. Love, in that mercy involves no dwelling on wrongs, but is instead focussed on moving towards reconciliation.

Understanding the difference between grace and mercy

People often confuse grace with mercy. They are related, but they are not synonymous. Grace is giving that which is not deserved. Mercy is withholding that which is deserved. Two sides of the same coin you might say.
