Indian Jewish Art

This curious painting by Indian Jewish artist Siona Benjamin is called Tikkun Olam. In Jewish teachings, Tikkun Olam is any activity that improves the world, bringing it closer to the harmonious state for which it was created.

The pale blue female figure, balancing on a lotus flower, is a portrait of the artist herself. With her  seven arms extended upward she looks like a Hindu goddess. However on closer examination it becomes apparent that her hennaed hands are topped with flames. She is not a goddess, but a menorah.

Siona Benjamin is an Indian Jewish artist whose works blends the influences of illuminated manuscripts, Indian and Persian miniature painting, Byzantine icons, Indian comics, Bollywood, and pop art. The artist describes herself as “100 percent Jewish and 100 percent Asian.
