Galatians 5

I was reading Galatians 5 this afternoon and thought I would engage in a little free translation of verses 2-6. Raise any issues for you?

Mark my words postmodern Christians! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be culturally converted by modern Christians, Christ will be of no value to you at all. Again I declare to every man who lets himself be culturally converted that he is obligated to obey the whole of that cultural tradition. You who are trying to be justified by cultural tradition have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope. For in Christ Jesus neither modernity nor postmodernity has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.

  1. I’m not sure what you’re trying to say?
This phrase particularly makes no sense to me: “Again I declare to every man who lets himself be culturally converted that he is obligated to obey the whole of that cultural tradition.”

  2. Yes, that was the most awkward part of the paraphrase. I would have liked to have taken more time with it. I will think it over some more. Is the rest of it clearer though? It get the impression that was elusive for you as well, leaving you a bit more puzzled than I intended.
