Finally got along to Small Boat Big Sea tonight. For non-Sydney people this is an emerging church based near Manly, a beachside suburb on the north side of the harbour.
I’ve been meaning to do this for ages but as it’s on the other side of town making the trip has been logistically daunting, particularly since the trip for a 5:30pm start conflicts with dinner and getting ready for bedtime for my sons. But sInce Donna and the kids are away for a few days I thought Id take advantage of the opportunity.
First impressions: Was welcomed (always a good start!) and spent a bit of time looking at some of the artwork and soaking up the candle-illuminated ambience. There were lots of visitors (one of the hazards of being well known I suppose!) and the most striking feature of the space was a longggg table down the centre which the whole community sat around. Michelangelo eat your heart out.
Anyway, the evening was fairly interactive with a meal, poetry and some shared learning. I chatted with Mike Frost over dinner. Seems his follow up to “The Shaping of Things To Come” still wont be out till after Christmas. Said Alan Hirch’s one was going to be his magnum opus.
Met some other interesting characters, some visitors, some regulars, but I wont go into the conversations. Anyway, check out their website online.
