Though the burning of heretics (or at least the more literal manifestations of it) is a thing of the past, it would seem that the twisted logic and attitudes which gave rise to the inquisition is alive and well in some quarters.
Recently I came across a discussion on the benefits of burning heretics at the stake which makes for most disturbing reading. Almost inevitably the justification comes back to the medieval alliance of church and state. Never is that alliance questioned.
Yet I would say its infinitely questionable. I mean, was not Jesus executed as a heretic-revolutionary? To justify the burning of heretics is to justify the crucifixion of Jesus. I may disagree with heretics, but I will defend their right to disagree.
