Ellen Haroutunian’s recent comments on African Christian syncretism stirred up some old memories for me.
When I visited Zimbabwe, back before I was married, I struck up a conversation with a local taxi driver who affirmed Christianity but prayed to Nyaminyami, the Zambezi River God, as a sort of saint.
I was still quite syncretistic myself at the time, having not been out of the New Age movement for very long, so it was an interesting meeting of Christianities.
It’s worth reflecting on how we can be syncretistic, how we can mix Christianity with non-Christianity, without being all that conscious of it.
