The problem with Christians pursuing political power to effect change in the world, is that it inevitably leads to a legislative focus, irrespective of what side of politics you lean towards.
Such a pursuit is inherently in tension with the claim that the gospel is about grace, not law. When our words don’t match our deeds, is it any wonder so many cry “Hypocrisy!”
I am not suggesting we should ignore what is going on politically, within the church or the world, but I do feel the focus of disciples should be on heart change rather than legislative change.
Personally I don’t see Christians being very effective at all in the world when the heart of the church is so divided and its efforts are so focussed on legislative change. If the church in the west is to be revived there needs to be reconciliation within the church, which involves a commitment to both justice and mercy, both confession and forgiveness, and this can only happen from the inside out. This is hard, daunting even, but the beauty is it starts small, when we take personal responsibility for it.
