Lately, in case you haven’t noticed, I’ve been feeling anxious about the threats to democracy under Donald Trump. The instability, the polarization, and the challenges to foundational institutions weigh heavily on me. It’s hard not to feel anxious in the face of the unfolding crisis. But as I reflect on Ephesians 1:18-23, I’m reminded to lift my eyes to a further horizon.

Paul’s prayer in this passage speaks directly to my heart. He asks that the “eyes of your heart may be enlightened,” so that we may know the hope to which we are called, the riches of our glorious inheritance, and the “incomparably great power” that is available to us. This is the same power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him at the right hand of God—far above all rule, authority, power, and dominion, not just now but forever.
This reminds me that while earthly powers rise and fall, Christ reigns supreme. His authority transcends political systems and leaders. It doesn’t mean I should ignore injustice or disengage from what’s happening, but it does mean that my hope isn’t tied to any political outcome. God’s kingdom is unshakable, even when the world feels like it’s falling apart.
Lifting my eyes to that greater reality brings me peace in the midst of my anxiety. It also gives me the courage to continue acting justly and loving mercy without being overwhelmed by fear. I know I’m not alone in feeling this tension, but anchoring myself in the truth of Christ’s authority helps me face these uncertain times with a renewed sense of hope.
