Reflections on culture, nature, and spirituality from a Christian perspective

I’m not perfect, but I do my best to live by the wisdom of James, the brother of Jesus: “Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.” (James 1:19) It’s simple advice, but far from easy, especially in today’s world. Online interactions can be a minefield of misunderstandings, harsh words, and snap judgments. It’s tempting to fire off a quick reply or let frustration get the better of me when I see something I disagree with.

But I’ve learned that taking a step back to truly listen, to understand where someone is coming from, often diffuses tension before it even begins. Silence doesn’t mean weakness, and patience doesn’t mean passivity. In fact, it takes real strength to hold back, to respond thoughtfully instead of reacting impulsively.

In these times of heightened political vitriol and growing division, I believe this wisdom is more important than ever. The world doesn’t need more noise or anger. It needs more people willing to listen, to speak with care, and to choose understanding over outrage. I may not always get it right, but it’s a standard I keep striving toward.
