This wood engraving by Eric Gill draws us into the Lord’s Supper, with striking simplicity and rich symbolism. At the centre is a chalice, engraved with vines and grapes. Above it hovers the bread, marked with a cross. The Latin text that wraps around the image echoes Scripture: “They ate and were satisfied”.
Though Gill was Catholic, the image speaks across traditions. For Protestants too, it can serve as a visual meditation on the grace of God made tangible. It invites us to pause and reflect on the shared bread and cup: a sign of Christ’s presence among us, a call to remember the gospel, to give thanks, and to be nourished again by God’s grace.
