There is a lot of negative stuff going on in the world today, and in the church. If we focus only on what is wrong, it can quickly become disheartening. I am sure many of us have been there at some point. I know I have.
That is why I often remind myself of the words of Hebrews 12:2: “Fix your eyes on Jesus.” The Christian life is a marathon, not a sprint. Endurance requires focus and what we focus on will shape us.
If we keep our eyes on the mountains — the problems, the corruption, the divisions — they will weigh us down. But we are not called to fix our attention on the mountains. We are called to fix our attention on the mountain mover.
This is true at all times. But I find it especially true when there is corruption within the church. Disappointment is a warning sign. It is an indicator that something is wrong. But it does not set the pace. We do. We have a choice in how we respond. We can either turn us inward in cynicism, or onwards toward Christ. Hebrews calls us onwards.
So we keep pressing forward. Not pretending the mountains are not there. But refusing to let them become our horizon. I fix my eyes on Jesus. I hope you keep running beside me.
