Maybe I am reading things wrong, but when I read the New Testament the main criteria for leadership seems to be character. Not sex. Not race. Not class. Not even charisma. Paul himself admitted he was not a great speaker.

And yet character seems to be the quality that many of the most public pastors today seem to be lacking. Scripture consistently places the emphasis here: “Now the overseer is to be above reproach…” (1 Timothy 3:2). We seem to notice gifting, but overlook virtue.

It’s almost as if the ones chasing power, wealth, and fame are the ones we should be most cautious to trust with it.
