Duncan McLeod has been wondering aloud about outdoor worship experiences so I thought I might relate one of my own.
Probably over a year ago now, a number of the Thin Places crowd gathered on top of Mount Annan, near Cambeltown. The theme was celebration of God’s creation and, as there were lots of herbs around, we spent some time reflecting on our connection with our land and our Creator using the herbs as a medium. We stood in a circle holding hands with some incense burning and praying as we felt led. It was a powerful experience for many of us and drew out some wonderful prayers which were followed by a holistic Christian communion rite.
Part of the original impetus for the Thin Places group was a desire to experiment with forms of nomadic worship, worship that was completely divorsed from bricks and mortar. The group has gone international now, so the focus has shifted, but I would like to encourage others to experiment this way as we hope to still do as circumstances permit, to thoroughly deconstruct what we mean by corporate worship and think it all afresh.
