Throbbin with Thrombosis

I have a brief prayer request. I was diagnosed with deep vain thrombosis today.

As some of you already know, I partially tore my left calf muscle two week ago and have been hobbling along on crutches while I healed. It was annoying to have this happen so soon after starting a new job but I was getting by. Up until recently things had been progressing well and when I saw the physiotherapist on Tuesday afternoon she said I was ready to throw away one of them. I had actually been using no crutches for shorter walks so had been looking forward to getting off them altogether sometime next week.

Anyway, things deteriorated drastically since then. I started feeling some pain on Wednesday afternoon but initially thought nothing of it, thinking it was just due to the extra exertion from getting rid of one crutch. By Friday though it was so bad I was back on both crutches. When I saw the physiotherapist for a check up she grew concerned – the pain did not seem to be muscle related – so she spoke to my doctor and he in turn referred me for a DVT scan.

I was sitting there having the ultrasound and the technician was initially all joking and stuff but then … hmmm, one of your veins isn’t compressing. Joy. Now I am not sure what’s more unsettlingly, the abstract notion that this is life threatening, or the very concrete fact that I am now facing a treatment regime of daily consumption of Warfrin tablets for three months, 2 needles of anticoagulant per day for the next two weeks till the tablets kick in, and blood tests every few days for approximately the same period to determine when it has kicked in. I don’t know how I am going to deal with the self administering of needles but I think I am about to see what it feels like to live like a diabetic.

But it could have been worse. The blood clot is below the knee, which is lower risk, and I am grateful that physiotherapist recognized the signs and that I have such a great doctor and other people behind me. And I know God is walking beside me through this. So, that’s the story.

Postscript: Updates to the saga will be posted in the comments attached to this post.

Update: The drugs seem to be having some effect as the pain in my leg started reducing about mid morning today.
A nurse trained Donna in how to jab me with needles at lunchtime and, practical as ever, she handled that just fine. In fact I hope she doesn’t learn to enjoy it too much! 🙂
I still feeling unsettled by the whole thing though. And I had been so looking forward to getting back to normal as I’m particularly been noticing some distance with my son Daniel since I’ve been less mobile. So prayer for relationships – family and work – is something that’s real important to me through all this too.
I am so greatful I have you guys out there. Thanks for all who have been sending emails, leaving comments and chin wagging.

Fresh Update: Donna just got home from the Medical Centre with our younger son. She stopped to pick up some nappies and milk before continuing onto the hospital which is where they have suggested she go. I expect she’ll be there till the wee hours of tomorrow morning now.
I wont go into the specifics of his symptoms but I am guessing it is some sort of infection and we wouldn’t be rushing him out in the middle of the evening if we weren’t a little worried.
Let’s just say that this is all a bit much.

Oh mate. I’m so sorry to hear that. When my dad got it I saw how much it hurts and dirupts living. My prayers are with you, wish I could offer more.
    Get well soon, bud.

Latest update: The doctors told Donna our son has to have day surgury. Don’t know when precisely as they have to schedule it all around Christmas now. Not critical but not a small issue either. He’s only one and a half. What a weekend. Donna was exhausted.
As for me, the pain has reduced enough for me to get off the crutches again for short distances. Drugs must be doing something right. But I’m getting huge bruises on my stomach from all the needles (bruises come easier with anticoagulants in your veins).
I should mention that DVT is what killed Kev, one of our friends from Pagan and Christian Moot, last month. Cherry thought I know.

    Matt,
    Youch!
No flying for you for a while. It’s good that you’ve caught it, and the treatment regime, while sounding nasty, does indicate that people are taking your recovery seriously.
We’ll certainly be lighting a candle for you, and gratefully visualising you in good health.
If there is any assistance that we can offer in the physical plane, just let us know.
