Curious Christian

Reflections on culture, nature, and spirituality from a Christian perspective

Have a listen to the guided meditation here by former Trappist Monk, James Finley, and tell me what you think. Its ostensibly a Christian guided meditation however, personally I did not find much in it that was specifically Christian; seemed more Zen than anything else. That’s not to say I found anything particularly objectionable with it, I did not, and I would be happy to use it as with many stripped-down secular meditation exercises, but I expect something more for something that aspires to a specifically Christian label. What do you think?

One response to “Guided Christian Meditation | Experiencing God”

I could call this Christian in the sense of being unobjectionable to Christians, in the main. There might have been some lines that could be given doctrinally objectionable readings if we tried hard enough. But they were capable of good readings, too.
Do you know of any meditations that are more clearly Christian in content? If I remember correctly, while there was a sense of the presence of God to this, it was not labelled in such a way that wrong conclusions would be drawn. There was a sense of “In Him we live, and move, and have our being,” but enough of a sense of our own bodies and minds that what arose would not be given the status of direct revelation.
For an introduction, that is important. I have known of cases where the leader plunged people who came from traditions where this kind of thing was taboo right into a very spiritual and symbolic environment, and at least one found it very destructive.
