Centering prayer is a method of contemplative prayer popularized by William Meninger, Basil Pennington and Thomas Keating, Trappist Monks of St. Joseph’s Abbey in Massachusetts, in the 1970s. It is grounded in the teaching of earlier works such as The Cloud of Unknowing.
