Religious Literacy

Do you consider yourself religiously literate? Andii Bowsher has drawn attention to a religious literacy test from the Association of Christian Teachers.

A religiously literate person is one who:

  1. demonstrates an awareness of what life looks like from both theistic and atheistic points of view;

  2. knows and understands the central determining features of certain religions (e.g.Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, Hinduism) and secular ideologies (e.g. humanism);

  3. recognises religious and secular worldviews in practices and ideas (e.g. relating to the natural environment) and has some grasp of what makes each religion/belief system what it is;

  4. appreciates the principal effects of each religion/belief system in terms of the values,attitudes and impact it generates in individuals, families and communities;

  5. values the development of their own religious insight;

  6. values the development of religious insight for other people

I agree with Andii that the list suggests we have a way to go even with ‘religious professionals’ let alone the average consumer.

    Fascinating definitions. Might there also be a place for something about understandings the nuances and differences between religions in different countries/cultures?
    As far as church leaders, I can only think of a handful of pastors and theologs I’ve met who would pass that test. The strike-rate is better when I think about Christian lay leaders and Christians in non-theological academic backgrounds.

    Good point about the cross-cultural diversity of world religions. When a person makes sweeping generalizations about world Christianity based on nothing but a narrow range of experiences with American fundamentalism I take that as a strong indicator of religious illiteracy. Unfortunately many so-called experts, both Christian apologists and Atheist critics, fall into that category.

    I feel pretty good about my religious literacy as per that list. Wow. Who would have thought that all my wandering might have led to that?
