Talisman Sabre war games disrupted by peace Christians

Over the last week I’ve been watching the buildup to the Talisman Sabre War games thanks to Jarrod McKenna of the Peace Tree community in Western Australia.

Together with The Bonhoeffer 5 they plan to peacefully disrupt the war games … and can expect to get arrested in the process. In fact, their not the only ones. There’s a much wider Peace Convergence building with reports coming in that Christian peace activists have already blocked the supply depot (follow link for photos). Jarrod has a nonviolent direct action planned for when the live firing exercises start on Monday.

The Talisman Sabre war games have come under fire from other quarters too. The ABC reports “A group of doctors says the huge joint Australian-US military exercise underway in north Queensland and the Northern Territory sends the wrong message to Australians and the world.”

Prayers for peace and safety and success obviously wouldn’t go astray. Pass the news on to others to raise awareness.

We oppose these war games because:
They are designed to practice aggression and offensive military
strategies, not to defend Australia or protect its people.
They are intended to train Australian military personnel to take US
military orders – the so-called “seamless interoperability”.
The exercises will cost over $50 million, an obscene amount in these times
of economic recession.
They will cause serious environmental damage in a beautiful area near the
irreplaceable Great Barrier Reef.

Christian Activists found on Shoalwater Training Area
Margaret Pestorius, Jarrod McKenna, Jessica Morrison and Rev. Simon Moyle have been found
this afternoon on the Shoalwater Bay military training area after entering the base yesterday. The four are expected to be taken to Rockhampton Police Station.
