The caption reads: For long eyelashes, this is how 300,000 lab animals suffer each year.
When I think about animal experimentation in the cosmetic industry, it’s hard not to feel a sense of unease. The testing of cosmetics often lead to significant suffering for animals, raising ethical questions that trouble me deeply. Some verses that come to mind are:
Genesis 49:6 – Let me not enter their council, let me not join their assembly, for they have killed men in their anger and hamstrung oxen as they pleased.
Exodus 23:12 – Six days do your work, but on the seventh day do not work, so that your ox and your donkey may rest and the slave born in your household, and the alien as well, may be refreshed.
Proverbs 12:10 – A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel.
The first verse reminds us that harming animals, whether in anger or for profit, is not aligned with a compassionate spirit. The second emphasizes the importance of rest and care for animals. The third speaks to the moral obligation we have towards animals. This verse invites us to reflect on our choices and the impact they have on the lives of animals.
In contemplating these scriptures, it becomes clear that the cruelty involved in animal testing for cosmetics is at odds with the values of kindness and care that we’re encouraged to uphold. It challenges us to think about how we can advocate for more humane practices and support alternatives that respect animal life.
What are your thoughts on this issue? Do you think there’s a growing awareness about the need for ethical treatment of animals in the beauty industry?
