Reflections on culture, nature, and spirituality from a Christian perspective

Service of Shadows

Earlier this evening we held the Tenebrae service once again. This year my eldest son joined me. I had to get him to promise to be really, really quiet (and prove to me during the set up that he could go for 5 minutes without talking). It was a challenge for him to be silent for that long, but he did well. Realising it was a privelege, he rose to the challenge. Reinforces for me what I've observed before, that in the right context, making entry harder can actually encourage people to take discipleship more seriously.

Yeah, Matt, I agree. I felt a bit excited in my spirit when I woke up on yesterday Good Friday morning… I had a poem (or at least, a poetic reflection)incubate in my creative matrix overnight. It is my exploration of exile (with a strong feeling about needing to go “home”), death and resurrection. I hope people won’t mind if I share it here coz it’s a strange mixture of pain and joy which is something I tend to experience on Good Friday. I mean we, on this side of the Christian heritage, on the day we commemorate the day of Crucifixion, have the anticipation of Resurrection Sunday in a way that the people of the first Easter experience did not have.
    So here it is…

    This is Mother speaking.
I’m just reminding you of what Father wants for you.
Have you done your HOMEwork yet?
If so, then you can have your TV time, OK?
    HOMEwork is hard, Mother.
    You say
    Die to “THIS”
    (Stop)
    (Cease)
    (Desist)
    Stop THINKING this!
Turn your mind to HOME. Work your mind to turn. HOMEwork…
    You say
    Die to “THAT”
    (Stop)
    (Cease)
    (Desist)
    Stop DOING that!
Turn around. Head for HOME. Walk your body that way. HOMEwork…
    You say
    Die to “THE OTHER”
    (Stop)
    (Cease)
    (Desist)
    Stop BEING the other!
Turn over. Look to HOME. Be what you’re meant to be. HOMEwork…
    I know Father wants it, but it’s un-thinkable, un-do-able.
It’s just other than what I can manage right now.
    I can manage
    (Stop)
    I can manage
    (Cease)
    I can manage
    (Desist)
    … DIE … … Sigh!
I’ve done my HOMEwork now, Mother.
    GOOD
Father says that you can have your TV time now
