What is your favourite story about Moses?

Paul-Koli-The Burning-Bush
“The Burning Bush” by Paul Koli

I think my favourite story about Moses would have to be the burning bush incident, where Moses first encounters God while shepherding sheep in the wilderness at mount Horeb.

We are told that the angel of the LORD appeared to Moses in flames of fire from within a bush and that when he saw this he said to himself, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.” Then God calls to Moses from the burning bush, “Moses! Moses!” and Moses replies, “Here I am.”

God then instructs Moses to take off his sandals and announces that, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” God then commands Moses to announce God’s intention to free the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt. When Moses asks God for his name God says, YHWH, which is translated as “I am who I am.”

While there are other stories about Moses that are just as significant, such as the crossing of the Red Sea and the giving of the Ten Commandments, the story of the burning bush is still my personal favourite. It is where the story of God working through Moses really takes off. In many ways it foreshadows the good news that God announced through Jesus: that God is now freeing, not just Israel, but everyone and everything.
