Jesus Is A Promise

The Miracle of Jesus, Herbert Singleton Jr. (1998)

Herbert Singleton Jr.’s The Miracle of Jesus brings us face to face with a very down-to-earth, yet deeply powerful image of Jesus. Carved and painted on a simple door, the piece feels familiar yet profound, inviting us to see the sacred in everyday things. Singleton chooses seven key moments from Jesus’ life, like His birth, baptism, calming the storm, and healing the sick, each paired with straightforward phrases like “my boy” for the Nativity and “your healed” for His healing work.

At the center is a Black Jesus with open arms, offering bread and fish, alongside the promise, “I promise Everybody Is Gonna EAT.” It’s a message that speaks directly to today, reminding us that Jesus’ miracles aren’t just about spiritual nourishment—they also point to real, physical needs. It’s a hopeful call to care for others and confront the injustices that leave people hungry, bringing Jesus’ message into our world in a way that’s both honest and hopeful.
