The Worship of Mammon by Evelyn De Morgan

The Worship of Mammon (1909) by Evelyn De Morgan brings me back to the passage from the Gospel of Matthew where Jesus warns: “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

In her painting, the bronzed figure of Mammon, the biblical personification of money, is seen offering a bag of gold. A smaller, robed figure clings desperately to his knee, not simply reaching for money but drawn into loving devotion of Mammon himself, suggesting that material wealth has become an object of worship.

Mammon just smirks. He’s not forcing her.
