I often here the word ecumenical cropping up in emerging church blogs, articels and books but I wonder how ecumentical we really are? Reading the books and appropriating the rituals of alternate traditions is not enough. Genuine ecumenism occurs in conversation.  With this in mind I would recommend my Protestant friends read this post of Steve Hayes on emergence and post-modernity from an Orthodox perspective.

  1. Hi Matt,
    Just left this comment on Steve’s blog, too.
    I’ve just spent a three month sabbathical looking at mission and ecumenism, and concluding that they are very closely related. I have also found myself reading around some of the EC literature, and concluding that some of that brings mission and ecumenism much closer together. My other impression has been that Orthodox spirituality has a lot to teach us, and that some of the EC is more Orthodox than anything else. Interesting.

  3. Quite agree Matt;
    Genuine ecumenism occurs in conversation- and it is in the dialogue and not the appropriation of practices and rites that true growth will occur!
