Harry Potter and Witchcraft

Some of you may be in this interview between Brodie McGregor and John Smulo on Harry Potter and Witchcraft since the new movie, The Order of the Phoenix, and the new book, The Deathly Hallows, are now both out. Is Harry Potter real witchcraft? See what John has to say. You can probably guess what I’d say.

PS. if you want to get yourself a copy of Deathly Hallows, or search for related Harry Potter books, CDs or video games, just click through any of these links. I will certainly be getting a copy myself. Oh, and yes I loved the movie when I saw it Friday night.

Thanks for mentioning the interview Matt.
Just saw the latest Potter movie last night. Liked it a lot.

Well, I don’t know about real witchcraft, but you may remember a discussion a few weeks ago in which it appears that some people believe that Yog Sothoth is a real deity with a cult of his own.
So perhaps the bumper sticker “Republicans for Voldemort” is not so satirical after all.

Well, to be accurate they think Yog Sothoth is an “egregore” rather than a natural god, but once you start invoking egregores the whole issue of what is real / unreal starts getting decidedly greyish anyway.
Hmmm, maybe Harry is becoming an egregore? Is that what we are getting at? Now THAT could fire up some interesting interfaith discussions!
As for Republicans, would that make them “Death Eaters” or the infiltrated “Ministry of Magic”?

I think Voldemort might be more likely to become an egregore, along the lines of Yog Sothoth and Cthulhu, at least in today’s culture.
