Controversial gay Christian images from Swedish photographer Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin have recently been uploaded to YouTube so that you can now view the entire collection as a slideshow. Wallin calls the collection, “Ecco Homo” as a pun on “Behold the man” and “Behold the gay.”

I have to warn, if you are easily offended, best not to view these gay Christian images. Wallin’s photographs recreate scenes from Christ’s life with a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender spin and some of them are graphic. They caused the Pope to cancel a trip to Sweeden.

Issues of gay sexuality aside, I find these images deeply problematic because they sexualize the gospel in a way not dissimilar from the crucified woman photos I drew attention to recently. Jesus is more than a mascot don’t you think?

Like you I find many of these images problematic, whilst others are hermeutically challenging; I find the pieta particularly moving.

Whilst a few of those images were unnecessarily overtly sexual, ironically some of them are probably representative of real scenes experienced by the Pharisees as they beheld the man, Jesus, talking to prostitutes and dining with tax collectors.. and provoked the same feelings too.
