Reflections on culture, nature, and spirituality from a Christian perspective

I had an thought-provoking conversation with my son about Saint Nicholas / Santa Claus last week. He’s beginning to realize that the festive Jingle Bells hype doesn’t quite match his emerging map of reality. So he’s asking questions. As he asks more insightful questions, I’m committed to answering him honestly.

Well, in differentiating between fact and fiction we’ve once again revisited the original Santa story, of Saint Nicholas of Myra, the fourth-century figure from Asia Minor. He was a disciple known for his secret acts of giving, ensuring that all glory went to God.

When he was younger, my son was captivated by tales of the North Pole and reindeer, often overlooking this deeper narrative. Now, he’s beginning to recall that I’ve always shared a much older story—one that may not seem magical at first glance but reveals a profound truth: the true magic lies in giving. It’s heartwarming to witness him starting to grasp this concept.

When my youngest daughter was five, she asked me if Santa Claus was real. Not wanting her to confuse the fantasy of Santa with the reality of Jesus, I said no, Santa was a made up story. She was incensed! “Mom! You are not supposed to tell me that!” Oh well, life is harsh, better learn it early, LOL!!!
