Exploring life, art, spirituality, and the way of Jesus

I have not been able to track down the artist behind this image of “Our Lord’s Entry into Jerusalem” but I’m led to believe it originates from Ethiopia.

It is worth noting that Christianity in Ethiopia dates back to the first century, where it thrived for centuries, often in isolation from Europe. The story of the conversion of an Ethiopian official even made it into the New Testament, in the Acts of the Apostles. Christianity in Africa has very ancient roots.

Hello Curious Christian, the icon you have featured here was painted by me in the 1990’s. The original is in a private collection in the State of Missouri in the U.S.A. My name is Christopher Gosey, and a quick Google search will lead you to similar icons by me. The style employed is contemporary, but based in the traditional Gondarine Style (1632-1769). This style emanated from Gondar, the then capital of Ethiopia. The major patron of this school of icon painting was Empress Mentewab (r.1730-55) and her son Iyyasu ll.
