Glen Powell and Rav at Converse

Well, while I didn't make it to the Bible Means Business talk on angels on Wednesday, I did make it to Converse on Monday evening. We heard Glen Powell and Paul Ravelstein (Rav) give their take on the topic of Worship and Mission and had some interesting discussions afterwards. There was a diversity of opinions, but as for what I took away from the evening here it is:

  • Both speakers touched on the importance of the surrendered life. This seems to be coming up again and again for me of late.
  • I am not the only one that's jack of both types of music, contemporary AND traditional, to paraphrase the Blues Brothers. A number shared my concern of the lack of substance in the 'Jesus is my boyfriend' genre and the gross commercialisation of worship. Glenn mentioned how they've pretty much dropped the music thing altogether at Cafe Church.
  • We had some interesting discussions about and critiques of the 'temple paradigm' which was probably the most interesting part of the night for me.
  • We're still only taking baby steps as a movement.

Afterwards I hitched a ride home with Dean Tregenza of Spirited Networking. It's nice to put a face to a website and we had a great chat on quantum mechanics, post-modernism, and various stuff on the drive out west. Whilst on the subject of websites, Fuzz Kitto announced that steps are being taken to kicking off a Converse website. About time!

Mike Frost didn't make the night. We weren't sure whether he got lost in the last minute change of venue (we were gazumped by TEAR and a choir at the originally planned space) or what. But the word is he's back in circulation anyhow.
