Ken Wilber on Nature Mysticism

Earth Mystic has drawn attention to Ken Wilber’s attack on Neopaganism and other “ecophilosophies” for what he calls a “flatland” perspective on the cosmos. This surprised me I was of the impression that Wilber as a pantheist. Not that I’m disagreeing – quite the contrary – it is just unexpected that’s all.

Some of Earth Mystic’s follow up comments are worth noting too. One sample:

I’ve always felt that immanence-mysticism and transcendence-mysticism need each other, just like love and freedom need each other. Either without the other is monstrous. Transcendence without immanence leads to pie-in-the-sky otherworldliness, while immanence without transcendence leads to narcissism and megalomania.

Another commentator wrote this:

I read Wilbur’s critique of flatland cosmology in seminary, and found it to be very insightful. It gave voice to something I had been struggling with as a then-Pagan. Flatland was only one part of my dilemma, and the answer for me ended up being a move to Christianity. I would be very interested in hearing more Pagan viewpoints of Wilbur.

Interesting…
