Reflections on culture, nature, and spirituality from a Christian perspective

Near and Far

In preparing for the next Anything Goes gathering this Friday I have been looking up stories and poems in the Old and New Testament scriptures which allude to God’s immanence.

All too often people get the impression that the god of Christianity is divorced from the dirt of the earth, that YHWH is a sky god who has alergic reactions to the ground below; or that he’s restricted to holy ground and would never turn up at a Mind Body Spirit Festival. That’s one perception that I take great joy in deconstructing.

Here’s one sample offering for reflection

Jeremiah 23:23-24

“Am I only a God nearby,”
declares the LORD,
“and not a God far away?
Can anyone hide in secret places
so that I cannot see him?”
declares the LORD.
“Do not I fill heaven and earth?”
declares the LORD.
