After the LORD your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself, “The LORD has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.” No, it is on account of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD is going to drive them out before you. It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the LORD your God will drive them out before you, to accomplish what he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the LORD your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people. (Deuteronomy 9:4-6)
Do you think God was trying to ram home a point here? Or was he repeating himself just for the hell of it? Were the ancient wars of YHWH ever about national superiority? Is a patriotism that is blind to the failings of the nation ever God-like?

Re stiff necked people.
I remember reading a humorously tragic comment which went something like this.
Some native-“American” “Indians” pointed out that the reason the white man so easily conquered the “Indians” is because they were rolling around on the ground laughing at the ridiculous stiff-necked and stiff-bodied white men invaders.
The natives of Hawaii also noticed that the white men were very stiff-bodied too, and that they were simultaneously very shallow breathers. Which is to say that were not in any sense Spiritual, or Spirit breathers.
The Greek word for Spirit means breathe.
