As we approach Christmas, I’ve been reminded repeatedly that the majority of Australians aren’t anti-Christian. To be anti-anything would imply they cared. Rather, what they are is apathetic. Jesus isn’t rejected with vitriol, but with a yawn.
It would be a misnomer to call such Australians atheists. Atheists at least have conviction and are interested in religious conversations, even if only to argue against them. What I keep encountering is indifference—a focus on the immediate and the superficial. This leads me to wonder: what prompts people to care? And more importantly, how do I increase my care for those who don’t?
