Dion Fortune once discribed magick as “the art of changing consciousness at will”. It strikes me that prayer could alternately be described as “the art of changing consciousness in alignment with God’s will”. The emphasis in prayer is on ego transcending not strengthening. We are invited to shift our consciousness to ways that are more in accord with faith, hope and love. We are to become channels of God’s energetic love. As the apostle Peter says, “Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed” and “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.”

It is all pattern patterning completely oblivious to Consciousness with a capital C.
And yes it is possible to change the pattern via prayer but it takes much more than the usual asking-God-for-favors kind of prayer(s) that Christians engage in.

John, you seem to have some misunderstandings regarding the nature of prayer that Christians engage in. The “asking-God-for-favors kind of prayer” is only one dimention of prayer, and practiced in isolation is considered unbalanced and unbiblical. You would do well to expand your awareness of Christian prayer.
As for the teachings of Adi Da, I have a problem with his recommendation to “embrace the life of devotion to Me.” I recall some years ago you suggesting that what he had over Christ was that he was a living avatar. But he died in 2008. So is that point not moot now?
