Reflections on culture, nature, and spirituality from a Christian perspective

A saying attributed to St. Columba:

My Druid is Christ, the Son of God,

Christ, Son of Mary,

the Great Abbot,

The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

This saying speaks deeply to me, intertwining the old and the new, blending ancient traditions with the truth of Christ. It’s powerful how Columba refers to Christ as his “Druid,” a term deeply rooted in Celtic spirituality. For the Druids, wisdom, guidance, and connection with the divine were central. And here, Columba is saying that Christ is the ultimate source of that wisdom and spiritual connection.

I was just reading something about St Columba, founder of Iona monastery, the other day, Matt! There are some fascinating stories of his life and the mysterious Picts (“the painted ones”). Pictish Kings, apparently had Druid advisors. Perhaps the quote attributed to St Columba indicates his trust in the trinitarian God as the ultimate authority and the source of all wisdom?
