I have often wondered why Trump has lasted so long and why God has allowed it. The only answer that makes sense to me is that God is testing us, and by this, I mean the church in particular.
For me Trump functions less as an Antichrist figure, heralding the apocalypse, and more as a satanic test, quality checking those who claim to be God’s followers. In Scripture, Satan often appears not merely as a destroyer, but as a tempter who exposes what already lies within the human heart. Job, David, and Judas are all tested by Satan in different ways, with differing results. Jesus himself is tempted in the wilderness, to see what kind of a Messiah he will be.
In that sense, Trump has functioned for the modern church like the Ring of Sauron in The Lord of the Rings. The Ring does not usually corrupt through outright evil at first, but through justified desire: the wish to protect one’s people, defeat enemies, restore greatness, impose order. Each member of the Fellowship is tested differently. Some resist. Others begin imagining what good they could accomplish if only they possessed its power. Boromir falls not because he hates Gondor, but because he imagines what good he could do with such power.
So too, seductive political power tests the church. It reveals whether Christians truly believe the kingdom of God comes through humility, mercy, truthfulness, and the cross, or whether those convictions collapse when offered proximity to power, cultural dominance, and a strongman protector. The test is not merely political but spiritual: whether the church follows Christ’s way of sacrificial love, or is willing to exchange it for the promise of winning the culture wars.
