Just because something feels right, does that make it right? How sovereign are our emotions?
There are so many situations in which our culture urges us, “If it feels right, it probably is. So just go with it”. But is this always wise?
Proverbs warns us, “For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword.” The prophets painted a picture of a God who feels deeply, true, but they also warned Israel of the unreliability of their emotional compass.
So when we are thinking through ethical challenges and ethical justifications for lifestyle decisions, maybe we need to look deeper than what feels right, here and now.
